In progress · The starting point

A new shade for a woven pair.

Two vintage lamps, warm woven texture, and the possibility of a very different light.

These are the original bases, before cleaning, any needed rewiring, and the making of their new shades.

What is already here

Texture worth keeping.

The woven surfaces, rounded bodies, and carrying handles give this pair its character. Before a fabric is chosen or a shade is made, there is already plenty to work with.

Our starting point is the lamp itself. The shade needs to belong with the base, bringing its shape and texture into balance rather than covering up what makes it interesting.

The work ahead

From found bases to a considered pair.

Clean and prepare

Cleaning comes first, with rewiring where needed. The photographs here record the lamps before that work.

Find the right shade

Next comes choosing the shape, size, and fabric. We’ll consider those choices against the bases before making the shades.

Make and bring together

Then the shades take shape, and the finished pair can be seen together. For now, the final fabric, price, and completion date are not set.
